Curriculum Resource: Teaching About Current Events in the Middle East and North Africa

If you are looking for lesson plans dealing with the latest internal conflicts in several middle Eastern and North African countries, the website of Morningside Center for Teaching Responsibility, which is called Teachable Moment, is a great place to start.

They have two new lesson plans on this subject that are geared to middle schoolers.  One is called Tunisia to Egypt & Beyond:  FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY?  In this lesson, students consider issues of liberty around the recent events in the Middle East and North Africa by examining a current song, video interview, and readings.

The other lesson, Egypt's Nonviolent Revolution, learns the techniques the local population used to overthrow a long-standing ruler and discuss them in light of Martin Luther King Jr.'s statements about the use of nonviolence to overcome oppression.

They have additional resources on this subject for other age ranges, along with multiple lesson plans on other topics.
